Abstract
Ocean Literacy originated in the US (2004) as an answer to the absence of ocean-related themes in formal education. Over the past 16 years, the concept has been evolving, being adopted and adapted all over the world. It was out of this evolution that the Blue School programme was created in Portugal (2017). The United Nations Ocean Decade represents, now, an ideal moment for the definitive rise of Ocean Literacy as a global strategy, acting as a gathering of actions, sectors and actors, all speaking with one voice.
