The “From My Language I See the Sea” Contest is inspired by the expression of Portuguese author Vergílio Ferreira - "Da Minha Língua Vê-se o Mar" - to challenge Blue School students from the 1st to 12th grades to create texts and illustrations that celebrate the sea as a reflection of our identity and as a unifying element between different cultures.

The “From My Language, You See the Sea” Contest is back and, in this second edition, participation has been extended to students from the 1st and 2nd school cycles, who now join students from the 3rd cycle and secondary education.

Inspired by Vergílio Ferreira’s expression, the competition invites students to celebrate the sea as a reflection of our identity and as an element that unites different cultures.

Through words and drawings, participants will be able to share their connection to the Ocean and reveal new ways of seeing and feeling it.

To take part, students must submit two elements:

  1. An original creative text based on the theme “From My Language, You See the Sea”;
  2. A hand-drawn illustration representing the text created.

The jury for the “From My Language, You See the Sea” Competition includes author Nuno Caravela and illustrator Carla Nazareth.

Nuno Caravela

Nuno Caravela was born in Lisbon on 1 August 1968. He studied at IADE and AR.CO. – Centre for Art and Communication, and began his career as an author and illustrator in 1992.

At the same time, he worked for six years as a creative professional in advertising agencies. For seven years, he was author and editorial coordinator of the project Global School – Tradition in the Classroom, dedicated to preserving Portuguese traditional tales.

He has developed numerous projects in children's literature in partnership with some of Portugal’s most renowned publishing houses.

“With The Cave Gang, my main goal is to entertain and stimulate children’s imagination, taking them on a journey through pages filled with discoveries, where everything is possible. A world in which all the characters, each with their own differences, limitations, flaws and virtues, become friends one can trust and accompany on any adventure.”

Carla Nazareth

Born in 1975, Carla Nazareth graduated in Communication Design from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon. She later complemented her studies with a course in Interior Design at the Cascais School of Arts and Design.

Through illustration, she discovered her own way of communicating, both graphically and three-dimensionally, collaborating with a wide range of brands, institutions and publishers, both national and international, while also creating original decorative and furniture pieces.

In this way, she combines all her passions, graphic design, illustration and interior design, in distinctive artistic projects.

She is co-founder of the studio-publishing house Nósnalinha and recently fulfilled the wish of many readers who had long asked for a book entirely of her own. She wrote, illustrated and published the picture book We Are All Goldfish, a work aimed at readers of all ages.

Entries may be submitted until 12 March 2027.
