Applications for the Escola Azul (Blue School) Programme are now open!

Schools interested in joining the largest Ocean Literacy network in Portugal can submit their applications until 31 October 2026.

What does it mean to be a Blue School?

A Blue School integrates the Ocean into its educational project in a continuous and interdisciplinary way, transforming how students understand, value, and protect the sea. It is a commitment that brings together knowledge, action, and community around one of the planet’s most precious assets.

A Blue School commits to…

  • Exploring an Ocean-related issue
  • Involving the local community
  • Encouraging students to act, engage, and make decisions
  • Bridging different areas of knowledge
  • Interacting with the partner network
  • Communicating its actions
  • Involving students of different ages

The project lasts two academic years and is led by a Coordinating Teacher, who is responsible for the application process and for monitoring the project within the school.

After validation by the Coordination team, the school receives the Blue School certificate and becomes part of a national network of schools, partners, and municipalities committed to Ocean Literacy.
